Pacific Temperate Rainforest
Location & Land:
The Pacific Temperate Rainforest is located along the West Coast of Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and the northern tip of California. It is the largest temperate rain forest in the planet.
The Pacific Temperate Rainforest is located between 40 degrees north to 60 degrees north along the west coast of North America. This wide range of latitude creates several major rainforest zones that contain different species of plants.
A large variety of species live in the Pacific Temperate Rainforest. Many of the wildlife live throughout this region. Some of the common wildlife are bears, spotted owls, bald eagles, marbled murrelets, wolves, deer, and salmon.
The main industry in the Pacific Temperate Rainforest is logging.

- The northern point of the rain forest is scattered thinly across several islands in Prince William Sound, the Kenai Fjords, Kodiak Island, and Cook Inlet. Sitka spruce and hemlock trees are found here.
- The Gulf of Alaska is the sub-polar rain forest zone and contains the Sitka spruce and hemlock trees. Cedar trees are not able to survive here.
- The northern end of Vancouver Island to the Gulf of Alaska is the per humid rain forest zone. This region contains red cedar, Sitka spruce and hemlock trees. The Douglas fir cannot survive in this region.
- Between the California/Oregon border to the northern end of Vancouver Island is the seasonal rain forest zone. Douglas fir, red cedar, Sitka spruce, and hemlock trees are found here.
- Northern California to the California/Oregon border is the coast redwood forest zone.

Climate:
The Pacific Temperate Rainforest has a moderate climate. The average temperature range is between 10-24ºC. The Rainforest lives up to its name with a large amount of annual precipitation. The rainforest receives about 300-400cm of annual precipitation to provide the plants with water so they can grow tall. In the Pacific Temperate Rainforest, there are 4 distinct seasons; Spring, Summer, Fall, & Winter.
Here are some fun facts you probably didn’t know about the Pacific Temperate Rainforest:
1. The Pacific Temperate Rainforest is the largest Temperate Rainforest in the world!
2. The Pacific Temperate Rainforest is the largest biomass in the world!
3. Due o the large amounts of biomass, this allows the rainforest to be one of the most productive ecosystems in the world.
4. This large biomass produces the majority of the world's lumber supply.
5. Due to the amounts of logging, the Pacific Temperate Rainforests is the most endangered forest in the world!
6. The Pacific Temperate Rainforest is one of the most productive ecosystems in the world in terms of biomass
7. In this Eco region, trees grow very tall due to the high amounts of precipitation.
8. Lichens grow on the trees and have a symbiotic relationship with algae and fungus.
9. The conifer, Lawson’s Cypress can live up to 560 years!
10. The Red Fox, a nocturnal hunter of the rainforest is only the size of a small dog!
